Formerly known for distributing advanced imaging diagnostic equipment by Canon Medical Systems Corporation, the company is charting a bold new course under Nakabe’s leadership.

This spark led to the OPELAⅢ— a wearable surgical lighting system. The device offers enhanced visibility and mobility to surgical procedures, signaling a seismic shift in medical technology innovation at TAIYO Corporation.



Harnessing his extensive background in producing ceiling-mounted operating room lights, the engineer recognized an opportunity to enhance surgical precision. Creating a smaller, wearable light that could transform operating room dynamics inspired Nakabe to develop OPELAⅢ.

By mobilizing a team of optical engineers, product designers, and electrical specialists, Nakabe led the development of the OPELAⅢ at TAIYO Corporation. This diverse team, unshackled by traditional medical practices, infused the project with groundbreaking ideas, paving the way for a device characterized by its innovation and utility.

Enhancing Surgical Precision with OPELAIII’s Advanced Features

TAIYO Corporation’s OPELAⅢ surgical headlight significantly advances conventional single-LED designs. The innovative OPELAⅢ integrates three high-power LEDs, producing a natural white light at an impressive illuminance of 145,000 lux and a color temperature of 4500 Kelvin. This design enhances visibility and precision in complex surgical settings by reducing shadows that typically obscure the surgical field.

The three LEDs in OPELAⅢ converge to create a volumetric light that penetrates deeper into surgical cavities, providing superior illumination compared to traditional models. TAIYO Corporation has addressed the potential overheating issues associated with high-power LEDs through its patented heat sink technology, ensuring the device remains safe and maintains high performance. Its compact design and nickel-metal hydride batteries facilitate the headlight’s mobility, which is safer and more reliable than traditional battery types.

Bridging the gap between Illuminance and mobility, OPELAⅢ is not just a brighter version of headlight but a compact, mobile version of OR light. This unique and innovative device sets the company apart in the surgical illumination market. OPELAⅢ’s versatility extends beyond traditional operating rooms. It is also used in emergency rooms, intensive care units, disaster areas, and regions with unstable electricity supplies. Notable deployments include emergency trauma operations in ICUs, JICA’s mobile field hospitals during the Turkey-Syria earthquakes, and humanitarian missions in Benin with the NGO Emergenza Sorrisi. Its portability and battery operation make the device indispensable in environments where conventional equipment is impractical.

The Future of Illumination

Building on this success, TAIYO Corporation is preparing to launch the new OPELAⅢ Cx model. This model enhances the original’s features with even greater illuminance at 160,000 lux and improvements in compactness and weight. Insights from the helmet manufacturing industry have been instrumental in refining the design, focusing on comfort and durability.

The upcoming OPELAⅢ Cx will be launched globally in 2025, starting with its pre-launch introduction at the MEDICA trade fair in Germany in November 2024. This launch is part of TAIYO Corporation’s broader strategy to meet contemporary surgical needs and expand its impact on global healthcare through innovative surgical lighting solutions. The company is also collaborating with the Japanese Red Cross Society, awaiting the delivery of OPELAⅢ, emphasizing its commitment to enhancing surgical environments worldwide.
